The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a navigable waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, stretching approximately 1,300 miles. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when the need for a safe and sheltered route for maritime trade became apparent. The construction of the waterway began in the 1880s, with various segments developed over the decades to facilitate navigation, commerce, and recreation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is responsible for maintaining the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). This includes dredging, managing shoaling, and keeping the federal channel at its authorized depth. The ICW serves as a vital transportation route for both commercial vessels and recreational boaters, linking major ports and coastal communities from Norfolk to Key West.
